Question
I have mild bleeding and pain while passing stool for the last few weeks. Is it piles, and when should I see a doctor?
Answer
Bleeding or pain during stool is a common sign of piles (haemorrhoids), but it is not the only cause. Fissures, infections and, less often, more serious bowel problems can cause similar symptoms. So it is not safe to assume it is piles without an examination.
You should see a doctor if:
- bleeding continues for more than a week or keeps coming back
- the bleeding is heavy, or you feel dizzy or weak
- you have severe pain, a hard painful lump, or swelling near the anus
- you notice a change in bowel habit, weight loss, or blood mixed with stool
- you are above 40 and have rectal bleeding for the first time
Meanwhile, simple steps often help mild symptoms: eat more fibre (fruits, vegetables, whole grains), drink enough water, avoid straining or sitting for long on the toilet, and stay active. A warm water sitz bath for 10 to 15 minutes can ease discomfort.
Most early piles can be treated without surgery. When a procedure is needed, modern options such as laser treatment are often done as day-care or short-stay procedures. The right option depends on the grade of piles and can only be decided after a doctor examines you.
